Guests & Attractions

During our Kickstarter, our backers unlocked some amazing content for all con attendees! New MexiCon 2017 will feature three special guests, free snacks for all and, for the first time, LARPs!

Special Guests

We will be welcoming three renowned game designers to New MexiCon 2017.

mlmMichelle Lyons-McFarland

Michelle Lyons-McFarland has been working in roleplaying games since 2000, working in-house on lines such as Shadowrun, BattleTech, and Dungeons and Dragons and freelancing for companies from Green Ronin Publishing to White Wolf/Onyx Path Publishing. She and Matt McFarland have started Growling Door games together and have made great games like Chill 3rd edition, A Tragedy in Five Acts, Daedalus and curse the darkness.

mmfMatt McFarland

Matthew McFarland, also known as BlackHat Matt, has been writing and developing roleplaying games professionally since 1998. Most of the work he has done has been for White Wolf Game Studio, where he contributed to almost all of their game lines (including both incarnations of the World of Darkness). He spent three years as lead developer for the Dark Ages game line, and wrote the Ennie-winning demo chronicles for Vampire: The Requiem and Mage: The Awakening. He has also done some assorted work for Green Ronin, Eden Studios, and Guardians of Order.

Kenneth Hite

Ken has done extensive work with Pelgrane press on their Gumshoe line and is one half of the show on the Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff Podcast. He has a large body of work including Trail of Cthulhu, Night’s Black Agents, and contributions to Bubblegumshoe.

We are excited to offer two LARPs for the first time!
7th Sea: Frieburg Haunting (Sat. 2-6 pm)

A darkness haunts the fields of the dead outside Frieburg in Eisen. What could be worse than the undead Horrors already a daily part of an Eisen’s life? Yet, something has the people scared to go out, even during the day. Can you find out what plagues the town, and free the people from the grip of fear?

The 7th Sea LARP uses a modified system based loosely on the tabletop rules. Many interactions are consent based, and pull from Improv Theater techniques. Join us as we test this new LARP system for the first time.

Slayer Cake (Sat. 8 pm – midnight)

In a land where music has magical power, rockers find themselves locked in a musical battle between Baby Metal, Glam Rock, Heavy Metal, Emo, Grunge, and *shudder* Doom Metal.

Heavily inspired by Brütal Legend and Metalocalypse, Slayer Cake will rock. your. world. Players take on the roles of musicians and roadies who must rehearse and perform a variety of rock songs. By “perform,” we mean of course lipsync and air guitar. They will show up in their best rock garb to out-style and out-rock their opponents, but they may also find their opponents more sympathetic than they’d think. Characters go on a Hero’s Journey to different mystical sites of Metal World in preparation for several climactic gigs. Then they attempt to use their well-honed magical powers to improve their performance. Simple, intuitive mechanics based on musical chairs let the players focus on those two things of importance: music and attitude.

Players who enjoy Rock Band will likely enjoy Slayer Cake, as lip-syncing and overwrought mock music performance will take up a significant portion of the LARP. This game is intensive in a physical way. Although competition among the players is embedded in the scenario, playing together in different bands requires a surprising level of cooperation as well. The LARP is built on horde LARP elements and character non-fidelity, such that players will probably not play the same character throughout the game. Light in-game touching may be involved.

Listen to the sound of SLAYER CAKE

Heavy metal sometimes deals with death and Satanic themes, which will likely also be part of the game. Anything that would be found the video game Brütal Legend would be game for the larp, but nothing beyond it. Players under 18 require permission from a guardian.

Thanks to our backers, we will provide a relaxation room and snacks! This was a really popular option from last year and we enjoyed giving everyone a space to hang, eat, talk and wind down (or up?!) from gaming.

And speaking of food…

There are many great local food options close to the con! Here are a few of our favorites:
Golden Pride – BBQ, fried chicken, and the best breakfast burritos in town!

Sadie’s – New Mexican

Owl Café – Diner, with great burgers and shakes

La Salita – Classic Mexican and New Mexican

Are You Not Enchanted?
